criminalwisdom: Jailers Key Guns
“It’s tough to keep a gun drawn on a prisoner when the cell door lock requires two hands to open - that’s where the Key Gun comes in. It’s literally both a key AND a gun.” (Gizmodo)

The balancing act between how much rule-making you like in language and how much you like language to evolve naturally isn’t necessarily the point of the serial comma debate (to me, the reasons to keep it have absolutely nothing to do with tradition and everything to do with actual utility), but that’s where almost any discussion of almost any arcane point invariably winds up. Language is alive, you see, and it changes, and its beauty lies in its ability to be shaped by an entire society that calls upon its collective wisdom and experience to create a means of communication that accomplishes what it needs to AND NO THAT DOESN’T MAKE ‘IRREGARDLESS’ OKAY AND STOP USING ‘LITERALLY’ TO MEAN ‘FIGURATIVELY’ I AM BEGGING YOU.

The eating habits of Mac users v. PC users. Nothing too surprising here. Although “Mac users prefer bistro fries” makes us wonder what exactly bistro fries are. Who knows! Sounds fussy!

mom in china: the menu
Here is the second half of an email from my mom, in which she gives the menu from the university restaurant (she scribbled it down while eating), and then adds some entertaining tidbits:
Stewed Forrest Toad with Hawaii Papaya
Flagrant duck heads
Coir Raincoat Cucumber
Jellyfish in aged vinegar
Braised goose intestine with chili
White fungus in orange juice
Sautéed chicken tendon with hot spicy sauce
Mixed goose gizzard with Chinese toon
Food-fashion salad stick
Quick-fried bullfrog in XO sauce
Braised pigeon maw and green vegetable with XO sauce
Nestle Lucky Dish with Four Treasures
Golden goose liver grains
Stewed angle-shaped refined flower stuffing with eggs and pork
Pickled Tile-shaped Pig Lip
New-style braised sliced kidney with pepper
Special gluttonous bullfrog with chili
Clodhopper-style gluttonous dish
Lron-grilled Weever with Soy Sauce
…. needless to say, we are facing some challenges here. Even when we manage to identify something we might imagine eating, they are wont to tell us they are out of it. There is also something strange about the portions. We figured dumplings are a pretty safe bet, but there is a column labeled “Dumplings” and nothing under that heading is translated, so we are just working our way down it, pointing at one after another. The first night we were told that the minimum dumpling portion was 15. Ok. But the next night when we asked for ONE order of dumplings, we got about 30. And tonight when again we asked for ONE order of dumplings, we got TWO plates with about thirty on each. We figure that if this goes on much longer, in a short while the whole restaurant will be filled to the ceiling with our dumplings…
Well, just when I thought that is definitely enough (dumplings and text), T discovered a card that had been set on our beds. Here is the content:
Go to bed
In the evening, the lower the temperature here, please take care yourself.
Weather forecast
21-28 °C
If you have anything else, let me know please.
Your housekeeper
Good night
****
Stay tuned!
love,
—mom

“I am pretty sure that approximately 99% of the world does not want to see their sibling naked. EVER.”
What I actually yelled at my sister this morning.
Her rejoinder: “Who cares! We used to take baths together when we were little!”
Ugh. We are in our 20s. Her boyfriend lives with us. Am I the crazy one? This happens fairly often, even when friends are over, and even though I have even given her multiple bath robes. I think she might be getting better about it though?? Please LORD?!

“There are a variety of minimalist running shoes available for purchase and wear. Effective immediately, only those shoes that accommodate all five toes in one compartment are authorized for wear. Those shoes that feature five separate, individual compartments for the toes, detract from a professional military image and are prohibited for wear with the IPFU or when conducting physical training in military formation.” —An Army order banning toe shoes.
